Preconceptions
Most people have a preconceived idea of
what yoga is...a bunch of hippies sitting chanting, Madonna-types with their
legs behind their heads, smug twiglets easily balancing on one leg...etc, etc.
In fact, it is a group of ordinary people moving their bodies in such a way as
to improve strength, flexibility, stamina, balance and breathing.
What is yoga & what are the benefits?
Standing poses are emphasized in Iyengar
Yoga. They build strong legs, increase general vitality, and improve
circulation, coordination and balance, ensuring a strong foundation for study
of more advanced poses. The asanas (poses) exercise the body organically
– the inner organs, circulation, joint action, etc. are all worked so as to
improve their function & efficiency. You can overcome many symptoms of an
imbalanced modern life, such as headaches, stiff necks, backache, insomnia
& digestive disorders.
Everyone! Beginners safely & surely
progress from basic postures to the more advanced. A typical Iyengar Yoga class
has a mixture of people wanting to tone up, ease arthritis, athletic types
wanting a challenge, stressed out people wanting inner peace, new mums wanting
their bodies back, people referred from physiotherapists, etc.
